Simona Halep recovered from a set and a break down to overcome Sloane Stephens for her first major title.
Highlights of the tournament
For the eleventh time in his career, Rafael Nadal lifted the famous Coupe des Mousquetaires. Nobody was able to challenge the Spaniard’s supremacy at Roland Garros, not even Dominic Thiem in the final. At 32 years of age, the Majorcan sailed through the men’s singles tournament, dropping just one set over the course of the fortnight (in the quarterfinals against Diego Schwartzmann).
In the women’s singles, Simona Halep was determined not to let this opportunity pass her by. Having lost two finals in the past (to Maria Sharapova in 2014 and Jelena Ostapenko in 2017), the young Romanian finally cliched the title after defeating America’s Sloane Stephens in three sets. It was Halep’s first Grand Slam title and she was the first Romanian woman to triumph on the Parisian red clay since Virginie Ruzici in 1978.
French duo Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut did their country proud by winning the men’s doubles at Roland Garros for the first time in their career, defeating Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the final.
