Marathon man Altmaier wraps up Day 1

What a way to bring the curtain down on Day 1. Germany’s Daniel Altmaier comes through a deciding tiebreak against Serb Laslo Djere after a staggering 5 hours and 5 minutes on Court 8.

Altmaier wrapped up his 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(8), 5-7, 7-6(6) win at 00:56 on Monday morning.

And that ties on a bow on Sunday. We’ll be back at 11am on Monday for Day 2 from Paris. Check out the order of play through the link below. Bye for now…

Moutet magic, Zizou's zing

While Nishikori and Wawrinka were wrapping up wins, we've had a significant upset on Court Simonne-Mathieu in front of a noisy set of fans where Frenchman Corentin Moutet has taken down in-form Chilean and 16th seed Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Jarry recently reached his first ATP Masters final in Rome.

It's been a rough day for Chilean tennis as earlier Rome semi-finalist and 24th seed Alejandro Tabilo lost to Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs (pictured below). The result earns Bergs his very first match win at Grand Slam level.

Stan in straights

It's Stan Wawrinka's night on Chatrier as he comes through in straights against Andy Murray. The Swiss former champion produced some trademark big-hitting on his way to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the former world No.1.

Murray waves goodbye to the Paris crowd for now but will be back in the men's doubles alongside Dan Evans later in the week.

22:43

Kei survives in five - AGAIN!

We've had a big, big result out on Court 6 late in the day where Japan's Kei Nishikori picked up his first Grand Slam win since the 2021 US Open.

After all his injury battles, the former world No.4 scrapped his way through 7-5, 7-6(3), 3-6, 1-6, 7-5 in 4hrs 22 minutes against young Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo.

That improves Nishikori's career deciding set record at the majors to an impressive 28-7.

Ruud arrives from title town

Two-time Roland-Garros finalist Casper Ruud will quietly fancy his chances here in Paris having twice come just a match away from landing the title. The No.7 seed from Norway arrives on the back of another clay court success in Geneva on Saturday and recently won the biggest trophy of his career - the ATP 500 Barcelona crown. Alex Sharp analyses where the right-hander is at coming into Paris.

Stan and deliver...

The first Chatrier night session of the tournament is well under way and this Andy Murray-Stan Wawrinka contest is so far exactly what we expected it to be.

Both are giving it everything, both are drenched in sweat, both are producing some old-school clay-court craft that's been easy on the eye.

After nearly 45 minutes Wawrinka is a game away from a one-set lead, with Murray serving at 3-5.

Richard Gasquet thrills the French fans with a big win over Borna Coric on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

The 37-year-old was given a hero's reception when he finished off the Croat 7-6(5), 7-6(2), 6-4 with - you've guessed it - a trademark backhand pass up the line.

Gasquet will play Jannik Sinner in round two if the Italian gets past Chris Eubanks on Monday.

Novak: I'll take it day by day

Defending champion and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic spoke to the press today after his late arrival from Geneva where he lost in the semi-finals to Czech Tomas Machac on Friday.

Having not reached a final so far in 2024, the world No.1 and top seed comes to Paris with question marks surrounding his recent form. The Serb told journalists he hopes the experience gained in winning so many big titles will help him over the next 15 days.

“I would say that I know what I'm capable of, and particularly in the Grand Slams I normally play the best tennis, at least I aim always to play the best tennis, and I was most of my career able to do that, so that's the goal,” said Djokovic, who plays French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert in his first match.

“I have been saying, you know, for quite a while that in terms of clay I want to peak here in Paris, in Roland Garros. Last year I had an amazing year, and particularly here in Roland Garros, and hopefully I can have a great tournament.

“My hopes and goals are always the same, but I have to lower the expectations. When I say that I mean, you know, maybe not thinking too much ahead in advance in terms of the tournament and who I might face in the later rounds, but really taking it day by day, step by step, and really building my game.

“Because that's what I have really been struggling with, not really playing in a consistently good level.”

Ruud picks his top four favourites

Yesterday's champion at the Geneva ATP event, Casper Ruud, spoke to the media on his arrival in Paris. He will play his first match on Tuesday against Brazilian Felipe Alves Meligeni. The two-time Roland-Garros runner-up was asked by journalists to pick his top three favourites for the men's title.

"I wouldn't put myself in the list just because I don't want to kind of put pressure on myself, but I would put Novak [Djokovic] up there definitely," he said.

"It's not a big if, but, you know, depending on how Carlos [Alcaraz], Jannik [Sinner], and kind of Rafa [Nadal] feels, I feel like those three are also worth mentioning. If they are injury-free, I would consider them, well, four then. I would go with four guys.

"It's tough to kind of leave any of those out due to the fact that Rafa has won here 14 times and then Jannik and Carlos have been the sort of best of the younger generation in the past year or two. So I think that's a good list of four."

16:32

Alcaraz races into round two

No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz is a winner under the roof on Chatrier as he brushes aside American lucky loser JJ Wolf in straight sets 💪

We hadn't seen Carlos on court since he lost to Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters in early May.

The two-time Grand Slam champion lost his opening service game but was in control thereafter to win 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. He'll play either Jack Draper or Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong in round two.

16:20

Former champ moving on

The 2017 women's champion Jelena Ostapenko is another to successfully negotiate her way through Day 1 in Paris...

16:03

Play continues despite the rain

We have our first stoppage in play in Paris as heavy rain forces the court coverers into action for the first time at this year's event.

But plays keeps going under the Chatrier roof as Carlos Alcaraz closes in on victory over JJ Wolf. He leads 6-1, 6-2, 3-0.

And the fans inside Court Suzanne-Lenglen get to see that show court's brand new roof slide into action. Richard Gasquet and Borna Coric will be out there soon to get their first round contest under way.

Grigor into R2

A resurgent Grigor Dimitrov began his Paris campaign successfully on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win over young American Aleksandar Kovacevic on Court 14. Dimitrov has made Masters finals in Paris Bercy and Miami within the last six months and won his first ATP title for seven years in Brisbane in January. Osaka through in three

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka will be relieved to put her first round match to bed as she fights past Italian Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 on Chatrier. It was looking like a straightforward third set when she led 4-0 only to lose the next five games. Osaka finally finished it off after 2hrs and 1 minute and could play defending champion Iga Swiatek in round two.

Two big names are being tested early in the tournament. Andrey Rublev has split sets with Taro Daniel on Court Simonne-Mathieu and Naomi Osaka is starting a decider with Italy's Lucia Bronzetti on Chatrier.

French number one Ugo Humbert is in trouble on Lenglen and has just gone two sets to one down against another Italian, Lorenzo Sonego.

Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz and Brit Jack Draper are just getting going on courts 7 and 12 respectively. No.30 seed Dayana Yastremska has come through against Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

And here’s Monday’s schedule

There are a whopping 48 matches on the schedule for Day 2, as the first round continues in men’s and women’s singles.

Matches start at 11am local time on Courts Suzanne-Lenglen and Simonne-Matthieu.

They are followed by French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean who has the daunting prospect of trying to get past No.1 seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek.

If that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, the third match on Philippe-Chatrier is 14-time Roland-Garros winner Rafael Nadal in arguably one of his toughest tests to date when he takes on No.4 seed Alexander Zverev.

And that’s just the day session. As the lights come on French fan favourite Gael Monfils meets Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild. That match is scheduled for after 20.15 local time.

It's going to be a busy one...
