No.4 seed and last year's finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas rallied back from two-sets-to-love down for the third time of his career, battling past Lorenzo Musetti 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in a first-round night-session showdown on Court Philippe-Chatrier in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Greek star, who squandered a two-sets-to-love lead against Novak Djokovic in the 2021 Roland-Garros final, next faces Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar.

Musetti walks away from Paris on the back of a defeat from two-sets-to-love up for a second year in a row having blown a similar lead against Djokovic in the fourth round 12 months ago.

Déjà vu for Hugo

There were shades of 2020 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Tuesday evening as French world No.74 Hugo Gaston produced yet another five-set epic, reminiscent of his heroics from his Roland-Garros campaign two years ago.

In a four-hour battle in front of a raucous home crowd, Gaston eliminated No.19 seed Alex de Minaur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6(10/4) to set up a second-round meeting with lucky loser Pedro Cachin.

Merci, Jo

The 18-year storied career of French star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga came to an end at the hands of No.8 seed Casper Ruud on Tuesday.

Emotional scenes unfolded on Court Philippe-Chatrier as the former world No.5 was given a heartwarming standing ovation and a tribute ceremony in his honour.

Ruud defeated the 37-year-old 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-2, 7-6(0) to set up a second round against Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori.

French trio advance

Alize Cornet ushered through a trio of French players into the second round on Tuesday, as she swept past Japan's Misaki Doi 6-2, 6-0 in 58 minutes.

Fellow French veteran Richard Gasquet completed a 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 success - suspended from the night before - over South African Lloyd Harris while Caroline Garcia moved past American Taylor Townsend - playing her first major since becoming a mother - 6-3, 6-4.

Shapo ousted

Danish teenager Holger Rune claimed a statement victory on his Roland-Garros main draw debut, upsetting No.14 seed Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(4) on Court 12 on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, who won the boys' singles title here in 2019, was ranked 474 at the start of last year and is now up to a remarkable 40 in the world, on the back of a maiden title run in Munich a few weeks ago.

Shapovalov broke Rune as he was serving for the match late in the third and the Canadian held set point shortly after. But Rune recovered to force a tiebreak and locked down the win on the two-hour mark.

Rune is now 11-6 on clay for the season and plays Pedro Martinez or Henri Laaksonen in the second round.

Medvedev speeds through

World No.2 Daniil Medvedev enjoyed a hassle-free opening round at Roland-Garros, breezing past Argentine lefty Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Medvedev, who was 0-4 at the tournament prior to his quarter-final run in Paris last year, has a shot at returning to the top of the rankings, replacing Novak Djokovic, if results go his way this fortnight.

The 26-year-old returned from a two-month break to recover from hernia surgery last week in Geneva and looked comfortable on Tuesday during his one-hour 38-minute victory over world No.103 Bagnis.

Medvedev will take on Serbia's Laslo Djere in the next round.

Ostapenko, Collins blast into second round

Meanwhile, 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko fired 38 winners in her 6-1, 6-3 demolition of Italian world No.73 Lucia Bronzetti.

The Latvian No.13 seed needed just 67 minutes to wrap up the victory and will next face off with home favourite Cornet.

Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins was also at her ferocious best in her 6-0, 6-4 victory against lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova.

Collins, a quarter-finalist in Paris two years ago, converted 6/10 break points and struck 30 winners compared to just seven from Tomova.

The American No.9 seed awaits Shelby Rogers or Tereza Martincova in round two.

Former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova fought back from a set down to overcome home favourite Tessah Andrianjafitrimo 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. The Czech No.8 seed gets another French wildcard in her second round in the form of Leolia Jeanjean.
