Spanish No.6 seed Carlos Alcaraz triumphed in an exciting night-session third round against American No.27 seed Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in front of a buoyant Court Phillipe-Chatrier crowd on Friday.

It was a rematch of last year's final of the Next Gen ATP Finals but the pair are already competing and performing like 'Now Gen'.

Alcaraz is through to the second week at Roland-Garros for the first time and will take on No.21 seed Karen Khachanov for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Khachanov battled against British No.10 seed Cameron Norrie for three hours and 37 minutes before wrapping up a 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

Rafa books Felix fourth round

No.5 seed Rafael Nadal continued his assault on a record-extending 14th Roland-Garros title with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dutch No.26 seed Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round at Roland-Garros on Friday.

With French football icon Zinedine Zidane in attendance, the 21-time major champion picked up his 301st Grand Slam match-win to set up a last-16 showdown with Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is coached by Nadal's uncle and former coach Toni Nadal.

This will be the first time Nadal will face Auger-Aliassime since he teamed up with Toni.

"I already talked with Toni after my match. For me it's very simple. He's my uncle. I don't think he will be able to want me to lose, without a doubt, but he's a professional and he's with another player," Nadal said during his press conference.

"I don't know what's gonna happen, if he's gonna stay in the box or not, but I don't care. I have zero problem with that. So it's not a story at all for me. I know what's the feelings that we have between each other.

"I know he wants the best for me. Now he's helping another player. But honestly, for me, it's zero problem, and I know he wants the best for me."

Djokovic sets up Schwartzman last-16 meeting

Defending champion Novak Djokovic reached the second week at Roland-Garros for a 16th time in his career with a smooth 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in the third round on Friday.

With a marquee audience in the house that included legendary football coach Arsene Wenger and Hollywood star Woody Harrelson, Djokovic extended his current winning streak to eight matches, having picked up the Rome title in the build-up to Paris.

The top seed next takes on Argentina's Diego Schwartzman for a place in the quarter-finals, where he could sqaure off with long-time rival Nadal.

Another second week for Diego

Over on Court Simonne-Mathieu, Argentina's Schwartzman advanced to the last-16 stage in Paris for a third consecutive year, easing past Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

The No.15 seed avenged the heavy defeat he recently suffered to Dimitrov in Madrid and will try to claim a first win over Djokovic in seven meetings when he faces the Serbian world No.1 on Sunday.

Schwartzman reached the Roland-Garros semi-finals in 2020 and was a quarter-finalist in 2018 and 2021.

Teichmann edges Azarenka in thriller

Swiss lefty Jil Teichmann squeezed past former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the longest women's match of the tournament so far 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(10/5) to reach the last-16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

The No.23 seed needed three hours and 18 minutes to overcome Azarenka to book a fourth-round date with former Roland-Garros runner-up Sloane Stephens.

Stephens, a US Open champion in 2017, ended the run of French teenager Diane Parry, who had halted the title defence of Barbora Krejcikova in the first round.

The American claimed a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Parry to reach the second week in Paris for an eighth time in 11 appearances.

Gauff returns to second week in Paris

Eighteenth seed Coco Gauff avoided joining a long list of seeds to fall victim to Estonian Kaia Kanepi at a Grand Slam on Friday, when she posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory against the former world No.15.

Half the age of Kanepi, the 18-year-old will meet Belgian 31st seed Elise Mertens for a second straight Roland-Garros quarter-final berth.

Mertens won through to the fourth round in Paris for the first time in four years with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Varvara Gracheva.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich collected her second straight win over a US Open champion with a 6-4, 7-6(5) defeat of 21st seed and former world No.1 Angelique Kerber.

The 28-year-old backed up her upset of 12th seed Emma Raducanu to set a fourth-round clash with fellow unseeded opponent, Italian Martina Trevisan, a straight-sets winner over Australian Daria Gavrilova.

Tough break for Muchova

There were sad scenes on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Friday as a tearful Karolina Muchova was forced to retire during the third set of her last-32 meeting with Amanda Anisimova due to an ankle problem.

Muchova grabbed the lead by claiming a 90-minute opening set in a tiebreak but the crafty Czech rolled her ankle in the second and had to quit while trailing 6-7(7), 6-2, 3-0.

The 27th-seeded Anisimova now advances to the Roland-Garros fourth round for a second time in four editions and will face Leylah Fernandez next.

Leylah breaks new ground

Canadian teenager Fernandez knocked out Olympic champion and No.14 seed Belinda Bencic in their third-round meeting on Court Philippe-Chatrier, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

The US Open runner-up, seeded No.17 in Paris, needed 62 minutes to grab a one-set lead before Bencic levelled the contest.

The decider witnessed a combined five breaks of serve and it was the 19-year-old Fernandez who wrapped up the victory on the two-hour 49-minute mark.

Fernandez is through to the second week at Roland-Garros for the first time, on her third appearance.
