Zverev into fourth successive Paris SF

Alexander Zverev survives a dramatic, nervy conclusion to his quarter-final with Alex De Minaur, watching a 5-2 third-set lead vanish before breaking the Aussie in the final game to win 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-4.

The German served for the match at 5-3 in the third only to be broken, but then steadied himself impressively to take the Aussie’s serve in the next game to finish the job.

The three-set victory puts him into Friday’s semi-finals against Norway’s Casper Ruud.

It will be the world No.4’s eighth major semi-final and tonight’s success extends his win streak to 11 matches since the start of the Rome ATP Masters tournament that he won prior to Paris.

22:42

Zverev leads 6-4, 7-6(5)

What a set to win for Alexander Zverev. That’s huge. Not only does it take him to within a set of another Paris semi-final but it’s a set that Alex De Minaur really should’ve finished off.

The Aussie had set point with Zverev serving at 5-6 and he led 4-0 and 5-3 in the tiebreak before watching it slip away. At 5-5, Zverev won an incredible 39-shot rally to bring up his own set point and he converted when Demon pushed a forehand long. It's a very long way back for De Minaur…

Let's hear from Mirra...

19:24

Andreeva beats Sabalenka

Teenager Mirra Andreeva has beaten the No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to move into a first Grand Slam semi-final where she will face Jasmine Paolini on Thursday.

The 17-year-old, who is coached by former Spanish great Conchita Martinez, came back from a break down in the decider and held her nerve brilliantly to edge past an under-the-weather Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 in just under two and a half hours.

With the world No.2 serving at 4-5 in the third, Andreeva brought up her second match point with a backhand winner up the line and completed victory with a perfectly weighted lob.

19:15

Tsitsipas double act

Over on Lenglen this afternoon Stefanos Tsitsipas and brother Petros went through to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles. They teamed up to beat French pair Manuel Guinard and Gregoire Jacq 7-6(2), 6-2. They play ninth seeds Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo on Thursday.

Thursday schedule

The order of play for Day 12 has been released and the Chatrier schedule kicks off with the mixed doubles final at 12 noon.

Iga Swiatek against Coco Gauff is the first of the women's semi-finals tomorrow afternoon, not before 3pm Paris time.

That one is followed by Jasmine Paolini against either Aryna Sabalenka or Mirra Andreeva for a place in Saturday's final.

Sabalenka breaks

Still struggling physically, Aryna Sabalenka has somehow managed to go up a break 3-2 in the third against Andreeva. Down on serve at 1-2 0-30, she rattles through eight points in a row to take the initiative.

Decider on Chatrier

Another tough set for Aryna Sabalenka and this time it gets away from her. The theme of the set – again – is Sabalenka’s physical condition, which isn’t getting any better. The world No.2 was frequently bent double recovering after the conclusion of points, and again was visited by the doctor and trainer during the set.

Andreeva, to her credit, has been able to block out her opponent's condition and she breaks to take the set 6-4 to force a decider.

The No.2 seed is in trouble.

Sabalenka comes through uncomfortable first set

Aryna Sabalenka survives a tight 62-minute first set in the early evening Chatrier sunshine.

It was an intriguing set to watch with the world No.2 clearly suffering some sort of physical discomfort, receiving attention from the trainer and doctor at the change of ends after seven games.

Initially Sabalenka was up 3-1 only for Andreeva to win the next four games and serve for the set at 5-4. Sabalenka broke just in time and they needed a tiebreak to settle it.

The second seed swapped ends 4-2 up and the killer blow came with Andreeva serving at 4-5, Sabalenka thumping a backhand drive volley onto the line to create two sets points.

Next it was Andreeva who produced some magic with an outrageous backhand winner to save the first set point before her opponent finally finished the shootout 7-5 after an hour on court.

17:00

Demon time

Aryna Sabalenka and Mirra Andreeva may have only just got things under way on Chatrier, but don't forget there's one more quarter-final to come after that.

Australia's No.11 seed Alex de Minaur will attempt to get past fourth seed Alexander Zverev and into his first Grand Slam semi-final. Norway's Casper Ruud awaits.

Jasmine: It's a pleasure

What a debut on Court Philippe-Chatrier...

16:35

Busy day for Jasmine...

Once Jasmine Paolini has processed her achievement - that was her first top 5 win at a major by the way - she has to prepare for a doubles quarter-final with Sara Errani, who has been watching her partner from the stands. The Italians, who won the recent Rome doubles trophy, are the last match on Court 14 against Emma Navarro and Diana Shnaider.

Paolini is one of three players still in the singles and doubles in Paris, a trio that also includes Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva.

16:30

Paolini powers into semi-finals 💥

The Italians can start to celebrate two semi-finalists here at Roland-Garros after Jasmine Paolini pulls off a huge upset to beat fourth seed Elena Rybakina 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on Chatrier.

The 28-year-old 12th seed completely dominated a one-sided first set and held her nerve superbly over the closing stages. She broke for a 5-4 lead in the decider before finishing the job after just over two hours.

It will be a first semi-final at a major for Paolini who’ll play either Aryna Sabalenka or Mirra Andreeva in Thursday’s semi-finals.

Yesterday, fellow Italian Jannik Sinner booked his place in the men’s semi-finals where he’ll play Carlos Alcaraz on Friday.

16:13

Set all, 3-all

There’s nothing to separate Rybakina and Paolini after six games of the decider, although we’ve had four breaks of serve. Twice Paolini has been up a break and she had points for a 3-1 lead, but she can’t shake off the No.4 seed and we’re 3-3 final set.

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina will be breathing a huge sigh of relief after she comes through a tight second set 6-4 to stay in her quarter-final with Jasmine Paolini.

After losing the first set 6-2, the world No.4 was twice down a break - at 1-2 and 3-4 - before wriggling out of trouble. She broke back to make it 4-4, held for 5-4 and then wrapped it up with another break thanks to a move forward to the net on set point.

Doubles update #3

In the mixed doubles, New Zealand No.6 seeds Erin Routliffe and Michael Venus are currently on Court 14 and have taken the first set against No.2 seeds Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

The winners will take their semi-final spot to meet unseeded pair Ulrikke Eikeri and Maximo Gonzalez, who knocked out defending champions Miyu Kato and Tim Puetz in the quarter-finals.

At the top of the draw the other mixed doubles semi-final will be decided today. Su-wei Hsieh and Jan Zielinksi are due on Simonne-Mathieu later this afternoon to face Desirae Krawczyk – in her second match of the day – and Neal Skuspki for a place in the final.

Upset alert on Chatrier

We have a big upset brewing on Chatrier after a lightning fast start by Italian Jasmine Paolini in the first women’s quarter-final of the day. The 12th seed has come out flying to take the opening set off fourth seed Elena Rybakina 6-2 in exactly half an hour.

The Italian has only dropped one point on serve so far in her bid for a first Grand Slam semi-final today.

Doubles update #2

At No.5, Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova are the highest remaining seeds in the women’s doubles draw. They delivered a quarter-final masterclass this afternoon to book their semi-final place against No.8 seeds Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk.

In the other half of the draw and away from their singles campaigns, Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva are still to play their respective doubles quarter-finals. They have the unusual possibility of meeting over the net in both doubles and singles in the semi-finals.

Both players will benefit from their partners’ extensive doubles experience. Andreeva is playing with three-time doubles Grand Slam winner Vera Zvonareva, and Paolini is partnering five-time Slam champion (including Roland-Garros 2012) Sara Errani.

Doubles update #1

So where are we in the doubles?

Remarkably, three players still in the singles title fight are also still playing doubles: Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva. Up to last night that included Stefanos Tsitsipas too.

This obviously complicates the already fiendish scheduling jigsaw but the draws are taking shape.

In the men’s doubles, No.1 seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos are through to the semis and yet to drop a set.

They must wait to find out their semi-final opponents: Stefanos and Petros Tsitsipas are still to play their third-round match, and there is then a quarter-final to fit into that side of the draw. The Tsitsipas brothers will be on Suzanne-Lenglen later this afternoon.

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori shocked No.3 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury to book their semi-final place. They meet either the Belgian No.10 seeds Sander Gille and Joren Vliegen, or No.2 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden. That match is currently in a first-set tie-break on Suzanne-Lenglen.

Quarter-final time

It’s time for the first women’s quarter-final of the day on Chatrier – fourth seed Elena Rybakina up against Italian 12th seed Jasmine Paolini.

It’s a fourth meeting between the two, with Rybakina up 2-1 in their head-to-head. It’s their second clash during this year’s clay season, and it was tight the last time they played with the Kazakh coming through in three sets in Stuttgart 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Andreeva and Martinez aiming big

Mirra Andreeva steps on Court Philippe-Chatrier later to take on the world No.2 Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the semi-finals. The 17-year-old recently started working with former Spanish pro Conchita Martinez. Writer Alex Sharp met the former Wimbledon champion to talk about the teenager’s potential.

“Stay humble, feet on the ground, she needs to stay patient, to be able to do all the steps without any hurry,” Martinez says. “If [a Grand Slam title] comes sooner rather than later, then it's very welcome, a bonus.”
