Lights out in Paris...

That wraps up another action-packed day of tennis from Roland-Garros, despite a few rain breaks along the way. Wins for Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Casper Ruud, Qinwen Zheng, Taylor Fritz, Elena Rybakina, Holger Rune and Alex De Minaur were some of the main talking points.

On Wednesday, the second round gets going in the top half of the women’s draw and the bottom half of the men’s draw.

That means Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Ons Jabeur, Andrey Rublev, Coco Gauff, Hubert Hurkacz and Danielle Collins are just some of the big names in action.

The match of the day on paper is defending champion Swiatek’s second round clash with four-time major winner Naomi Osaka.

Take a look at the schedule below and we’ll see you from 11am Paris time…

Bublik rounds-off Day 3

Play comes to a close in Paris just a few minutes before midnight with Alexander Bublik winning in straight sets against qualifier Gregoire Barrere on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The result sets him up with a Thursday match against Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.

23:37

Badosa battles back

Former world No.2 Paula Badosa finishes off a thriller against Britain's Katie Boulter in front of a big Court 9 crowd, fighting back from a break down in both the second and third sets. The popular Spaniard eventually came through against the No.26 seed 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. She was a set and 4-2 down at one stage. Badosa will be back to play Yulia Putintseva who beat Sloane Stephens on Tuesday.

Djokovic into R2

Just a touch after 11pm local time defending champion Novak Djokovic finishes off a straight-sets win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Chatrier. That second set tiebreak was the passage of play that allowed the top seed to take control of the match and he eventually went on to win 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4 in 2 hours and 31 minutes. Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena will be the main waiting for him when he returns on Thursday.

Djokovic up two sets to love

That wasn’t the most comfortable of sets for the world No.1 and he’ll be relieved to come through a second set tiebreak 7-3 to go ahead 6-4, 7-6 on French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

The top seed was forced to serve to stay in the set twice at 4-5 and 5-6 before making a fast start in the shootout.

He needs one more set to book a spot in round two and has taken the sting out of the French crowd by winning that second set.

The No.2 seed was fizzing on Chatrier earlier today, employing her usual power hitting but also mixing in a variety of other shots to confound 19-year-old Erika Andreeva for the loss of just three games.

Novak in the house

World No.1 Novak Djokovic is a couple of hours away from stepping back onto the Chatrier clay to face French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert. The Serb top seed has just arrived at RG...

18:12

Kasatkina wins on Lenglen

No.10 seed and former semi-finalist Daria Kasatkina only needed a couple of sets to get past Poland's Magdalena Frech on Court Suzanne-Lenglen 7-5, 6-1. Next on that court under the roof Holger Rune will tackle British player Dan Evans.

Staying with the women's draw, the highlights of Aryna Sabalenka's victory over Erika Andreeva are now available. You can enjoy those below.

17:51

If it works...

Aryna Sabalenka's habit of signing her coach Jason Stacy's head before each match has turned into quite the ritual.

Dating back to this year's successful run to the Australian Open title, she first did it before her opening match against German qualifier Ella Seidel. She won that encounter and so who would rock the boat by changing things up?

"After I won, I told Jason, ‘Well, I guess it’s a routine right now.'"

17:39

Aryna into R2

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka outclassed Erika Andreeva 6-1, 6-2 under the Chatrier roof to get her first win on the board this year in Paris. As well as her trademark power, the world No.2 demonstrated some nice variety during 68 minutes on court. Good start to her tournament.

Demon in a hurry

Alex de Minaur is two sets up in just over an hour having taken the second set 6-0 in his first round match against Alex Michelsen on Court Simonne-Matthieu.

Maybe the Australian No.11 seed has somewhere to be, but he’s not hanging about.

Sabalenka smokeshow

No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka is charging towards the second round on Chatrier. The world No.2 flew through the opening set 6-1 in half an hour under the roof against Erika Andreeva.

16:54

Zheng-Cornet highlights

If you missed some of the early action, Alize Cornet said an emotional goodbye to the sport when she lost the final match of her career to China's Qinwen Zheng on Chatrier. Check out the key moments from that one below.

16:36

We're on!

Play is under way on the outside courts. It's pretty grey out there but spirits are high.

On Court Simonne-Matthieu, Alex de Minaur is wasting no time and is 4-0 after 20 minutes against 19-year-old Alex Michelsen of the USA.

Over on Court 7, No.25 seed Elise Mertens has also made a fast start and is 4-0 up against Argentinian Maria Lourdes Carle.
We'll bring you news of other matches throughout the afternoon.

16:30

Win for Etcheverry

Tomas Martin Etcheverry sealed the win against 21-year-old Frenchman Arthur Cazaux with a 6-4 final set.

The Argentinian, a quarter-finalist here in 2023, must now wait to find out whether he'll be playing another Frenchman in Arthur Rinderknech, or world No.96 wildcard from Australia Adam Walton.

Rinkerknech currently leads Walton 3-1 on Court 6.

16:10

Ruud is thruu

Casper Ruud has secured his place in the second round with a straight sets win over Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves on Chatrier.

The two-time Roland-Garros finalist will now face either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Valentin Vacherot.

And here’s a nugget for you: at Bastad in 1995, Meligeni Alves’ uncle Fernando Meligeni beat Ruud's father (and coach) Christian for one of his three titles 🤩

Encore!

The rain has meant we’ve been short on actual tennis today, but if you’re having withdrawal symptoms, here’s a bit of a recap of what happened yesterday at Roland-Garros

The story of the day was undoubtedly Rafa’s first round meeting with Alexander Zverev on Chatrier. The 14-time trophy winner here has hinted that this may have been his last appearance but is keeping us all guessing. Even so, some of his contemporaries on the men’s and women’s tour have had plenty to say about the King of Clay, as have some who have faced him in the finals at Roland-Garros.

In other action, Iga Swiatek made a storming start to her campaign, as did Jannik Sinner and Coco Gauff

Late into the evening Gael Monfils thrilled the crowds on Chatrier with a win against Thiago Seyboth Wild, while over on Court Simonne-Matthieu Daniil Medvedev booked his place in the second round (and a match-up with Miomir Kecmanovic) with victory over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

Play at 4pm?

A quick update on the weather. It's much drier around the grounds now and we're hearing from our friends on Roland-Garros Radio (click the radio icon at the top of the page or app to tune in) that we could have tennis on the outside courts at 4pm 🤞

15:19

Etcheverry bossing Cazaux

Things were looking pretty good for home hope Arthur Cazaux when he took the opening set against 28th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Lenglen only for the Argentine to slowly take control of the match.

The 24-year-old South American has smoked his way through sets two and three to lead 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to put himself a set away from a second round meeting with either another Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech or Aussie Adam Walton.

Ruud ruling the roost

Casper Ruud has taken the first set 6-3 on Chatrier against Felipe Meligeni Alves.

The Norwegian won his first four service games to love, and is currently 2-0 up in the second set.

Cornet waves goodbye

The tears start to flow for Alize Cornet on Court Philippe-Chatrier as the enormity of the occasion starts to sink in. Her 6-2 6-1 defeat to China’s 7th seed Qinwen Zheng brings the curtain down on a career spanning two decades since she first appeared in Paris as a 15-year-old wildcard in 2005.

Today’s first round appearance means the Frenchwoman ends her career holding one of the most impressive Open Era records in the sport - she says goodbye to tennis having played a staggering 69 consecutive Grand Slam singles draws, a run that began in Australia in 2007.

Twice having enjoyed adventures to the fourth round here at Roland-Garros, the 34-year-old won six WTA trophies, reached a career-best ranking of 11 and enjoyed a Grand Slam best effort of a quarter-final finish in Australia in 2022.

The right-hander also had the knack of springing a surprise against top players, and none was more dramatic than her win over Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2014. She beat another world No.1 – Iga Swiatek – on Wimbledon’s grass two years ago to snap the Pole’s 37-match win streak.

13:01

Zheng up a set

Playing the last tournament of her career, French wildcard Alize Cornet is finding it tough going against Qinwen Zheng, who reached her first Grand Slam final in Australia in January. The Chinese seventh seed quickly finished off the first set 6-2.

Over on Lenglen the second match of the day is under way with Frenchman Arthur Cazaux trying to use some decent crowd support to get past Argentine 28th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry. They're in the early stages...

No.4 seed Elena Rybakina moved through to the second round in just 73 minutes on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, beating Belgium's Greet Minnen 6-2, 6-4 to set up a meeting with either Angelique Kerber or Arantxa Rus.

Asked about the need to adjust her play to the day's damp conditions, she seemed unfazed. "That's tennis" she replied.

Mixing it up

The mixed doubles are always a great favourite at the Slams and there’ll be a hint of romance in the air when play gets going on Wednesday.

Tennis sweethearts Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa – or ‘Tsitsidosa’ to fans –  get their campaign under way against Japan’s Ena Shibahara and the USA’s Nathaniel Lammons, while Ugo Humbert and girlfriend Tessah Andrianjafitrimo have the daunting task of facing No.1 seeds Australians Ellen Perez and Matthew Ebden.

12:03

Chatrier under way

Time to focus on the main show court here – Court Philippe-Chatrier – as Tuesday’s programme gets under way at 12 noon local.

First up it’s Frenchwoman Alize Cornet – playing the last tournament of her career – taking on Chinese No.7 seed Qinwen Zheng in what will be an emotional goodbye if Cornet doesn't get the win.

Later, No.7 seed Casper Ruud and women’s second seed Aryna Sabalenka feature on that court and tonight Novak Djokovic begins his bid for a 25th major when he plays French wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Fingers crossed for sunshine

If the skies clear, the men’s doubles will get started today.

Rohan Bopanna, who in January at age 43 became the oldest world No.1 in men’s tennis, partners with Australia’s Matthew Ebden as No.2 seeds to take on Marton Fucsovics and Emil Ruusuvuori.

There’s an all-French pairing of Richard Gasquet and Hugo Gaston scheduled for the start of play on Court 3, and No.3 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury hope to get their campaign under way on Court 2.

We’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime check out the full men’s doubles draw

11:49

Rybakina rolling

No.4 seed in the women's draw Elena Rybakina has taken control on Lenglen after a slow start against Belgian Greet Minnen.

The former Wimbledon champion lost the first two games before rattling off six on the bounce to take the opener 6-2. Currently that's the only match on court (under the new Lenglen roof) as rain continues to fall in Paris...
