Dominic Thiem waved goodbye to his Roland-Garros fans on Wednesday after losing his second round qualifying match to Finland’s Otto Virtanen on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

The 2018 and 2019 men’s singles runner-up gave it everything but ultimately fell to a 6-2 7-5 defeat to bring the curtain down on his Roland-Garros career.

The 30-year-old Austrian recently announced this will be his final year on tour because of an ongoing wrist injury.

Afterwards the 2020 US Open champion enjoyed a hero’s reception from a packed Court Suzanne-Lenglen during a ceremony to mark his Paris achievements.

Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo presented Thiem with a gift featuring the layers and composition of the famous red brick Roland-Garros courts.

“It was such a great farewell from Roland-Garros so thank you to everyone who came who gave me such a great support, such a great atmosphere,” said Thiem, who also reached the Australian Open final in 2020.

“There’s a special relationship with this tournament. I played the final in the juniors and then I slowly built a great relationship with the tournament.

“It’s a relationship with all of you guys - all of the fans. I had so many great results and great memories and experiences here on the courts.

“It’s the Grand Slam with my best results so I’ve really enjoyed every year of it. Thank you so much for all the memories.

“They will last a lifetime.”
