Highlights of the tournament
Mellerio, a famous jeweler’s located on the Rue de la Paix in Paris, is commissioned by Philippe Chatrier to design the Coupe des Mousquetaires for the winner of the men’s singles. And who better to hold it aloft for the first time than Björn Borg, who wins his sixth title and fourth in a row, making it 28 consecutive victories in Paris.
Czech player Hana Mandlikova brings Chris Evert’s run of 29 consecutive victories at Roland Garros to an end by knocking her out in the semi-finals. Another Swede also takes the boys’ singles – a lad by the name of Mats Wilander... The boy’s and girl’s doubles are also held for the first time.
