Sunday 5 June sees all of France holding its breath, with Yannick Noah through to the final. After beating Ivan Lendl in the quarters and Christophe Roger-Vasselin in the semi-finals, he finds himself up against defending champion Mats Wilander for the title. Noah wins in three sets, all of them close, and for the first time in 37 years since Marcel Bernard, a Frenchman wins Roland Garros. The men’s final is shown live for the first time in the United States by NBC.
In the women’s draw, Chris Evert takes her fifth title, defeating Mima Jausovec in the final.
