Rafael Nadal completed his very own 12 Labours of Hercules at the 2019 tournament, creating history by winning a record 12th Roland- Garros title. Not for the first time, the man from Mallorca was in a class of his own, lighting up the all new Stade Philippe-Chatrier. For the second year in a row, Dominic Thiem did his best to resist the Spaniard in the final and even managed to take a set from him on this occasion. It was all to no avail however.
In the women’s singles, Ashleigh Barty claimed her first Grand Slam crown, overpowering tournament revelation Marketa Vondrousova of Czech Republic 6-1 6-3 in the final. Barty was the first Australian to lift the title since Margaret Court in 1973.
Meanwhile, France’s Kristina Mladenovic teamed up with Timea Babos to win the Roland-Garros women’s doubles for a second time, the first having come in 2016.
