Carlos surges into semi-finals

Carlos Alcaraz makes it back-to-back Paris semi-finals after a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4 under the Chatrier lights. The Spaniard’s sixth successive win against the Greek earns him a meeting with Jannik Sinner on men’s semi-finals day on Friday.

Alcaraz raised his game to win a pivotal second set tiebreak just as Tsitsipas was threatening to fight his way back into the contest. He then broke in the seventh game of the third set to effectively finish the job, and move into the fifth Grand Slam semi-final of his career.

Alcaraz and Sinner will both be playing to reach a first Roland-Garros final on Friday.

22:04

Alcaraz closing on SF

Carlos Alcaraz plays a brilliant tiebreak to take control of his quarter-final against Stefanos Tsitsipas. He's up 6-3, 7-6(3) on Chatrier, a set away from returning to the semi-finals.

After they traded breaks en route to splitting the first 12 games, Alcaraz took control of the shootout early with a forehand pass to go 3-1 ahead. Another massive forehand, this time an approach, then enabled him to go 4-1 in front and he was soon switching ends with a 5-1 cushion.

Yet another thumping forehand winner brought up three sets points at 6-3 and the set was over when a Tsitsipas drop shot found the net.

Melzer back to guide top Austrian junior

A former Roland-Garros men's semi-finalist - and a man who reached the top 10 in the singles and doubles rankings - can be spotted courtside this week guiding the boys' No.2 seed through the junior draw.

Jurgen Melzer (pictured) is back at one of his most special venues to help leading teenager Joel Schwaerzler, one of the favourites this week in the junior draws. Chris Oddo tracked down the 2010 semi-finalist to talk about his new role and Schwaerzler's potential.

Here's a taster of what's coming up at 8.15pm on Chatrier tonight...

17:40

Sinner into semis

It's been a whirlwind last hour here in Paris and what a day for Jannik Sinner who is told on court by interviewer Fabrice Santoro that he will become the new world No.1, just moments after he beats Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3). Sinner is into his first Paris semi-final against either Carlos Alcaraz or Stefanos Tsitsipas who play in Tuesday's night session.

17:36

Sinner to become new world No.1

Jannik Sinner will make history for Italy as the new world No.1 when the next rankings are published the day after Roland-Garros finishes.

Current world No.1 Novak Djokovic had to at least reach the final in Paris to have a chance of denying Sinner top spot and after his withdrawal from the tournament today we now know the Italian will take over from the Serb at the summit of the men’s rankings.

Sinner will become the first ever Italian men’s singles world No.1. He is back on Friday to play Carlos Alcaraz or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

17:25

New men's champion guaranteed

With Novak Djokovic's withdrawal from the tournament this afternoon, there will be a new men's singles champion crowned in Paris on Sunday. Jannik Sinner - who is trying to wrap up victory over Grigor Dimitrov on Chatrier right now - is the highest remaining seed, with No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz a possible semi-final opponent if the Spaniard can beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in tonight's quarter-final.

In the top half of the draw, one of Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev or Alex De Minaur will be a finalist on Sunday.

17:00

Djokovic withdraws

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Roland-Garros with a right knee injury. Casper Ruud moves into the semi-finals with a walkover and will play either Alexander Zverev or Alex De Minaur in the last four on Friday.

The world No.1 said on Monday after his five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo that he had been managing the problem in the run up to Paris, and the injury became more severe during his fourth round victory over the Argentine.

“I don't know what will happen tomorrow or after tomorrow if I'll be able to step out on the court and play," Djokovic said on Monday night. "You know, I hope so. Let's see what happens.”

16:26

Sinner a set away

Jannik Sinner has looked supreme so far today and is now up two sets to love against Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4. One more and he's into his first Paris semi-final.

Court Philippe-Chatrier is looking pretty good too...

16:14

De Groot on court with Li

Dutch superstar and top seed in the women's wheelchair singles Diede de Groot has begun her bid for a fourth successive Roland-Garros title and 14th successive Grand Slam title on Court 7.

It’s a first round match in the women’s wheelchair singles that will attract a lot of attention today as her opponent - 24-year-old Xiaohui Li – is the player who ended the world No.1’s 145-match win streak in May.

De Groot has won the last 13 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, and she leads 5-3 first set against the Chinese player, who looks for her first victory at Grand Slam level today.

“Everything worked,” Swiatek tells interviewer Marion Bartoli on court after her 6-0, 6-2 quarter-final win.

“I was serving better than in the previous round.

“Today was pretty straightforward. I’m happy I can play so focused. I was in the zone today.”

No kidding 😲

14:34

Another Paris semi-final for Iga

That really is a statement victory from Iga Swiatek as she moves into the business end of the tournament in Paris in quite sensational form.

The defending champion was in control throughout during a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Wimbledon champion and world No.6 Marketa Vondrousova who looked lost on Chatrier for large periods of their 62 minutes on court.

Swiatek makes it 19 wins in a row in Paris, she moves into her sixth Grand Slam semi-final and her fourth at Roland-Garros.

She plays Coco Gauff on Thursday.

14:20

Iga dominating

This is turning into another sparkling performance from the world No.1 Iga Swiatek who leads Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 4-1.

When Swiatek led by a set and 1-0 - before Vondrousova finally won a game - the Pole had won 20 consecutive games across three matches against three different opponents.

Swiatek won the last game of her win over Marie Bouzkova in the third round, 12 in a row against Anastasia Potapova in round four and seven today.

Coco Gauff finally fights off the challenge of Ons Jabeur after a dramatic finish to their quarter-final on Chatrier.

Wheelchair history

It’s a landmark day at Roland-Garros with the start of the wheelchair competitions.

For the first time in Paris there will be junior wheelchair events, with girls and boys competing for singles and doubles titles.

Last year’s Roland-Garros and Wimbledon men’s champion Tokito Oda has already got his campaign under way against Ruben Spaargaren on Court 7.

Later on the same court, No.1 women’s seed Diede de Groot will start her campaign for a 14th straight Grand Slam title when she meets China’s Xiaohui Li. It’s a match that has already got people talking as at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup last month, the Chinese player put an end to the Dutchwoman's extraordinary run of 145 victories.
