Alcaraz vs Zverev highlights

Here are the highlights of today's men's final - the ebbs and flows of that mesmerising showpiece - as Carlos Alcaraz battled to his five-set victory over Alexander Zverev.

21:04

Alcaraz-Zverev match report

Let's hit you with some post-final gold before we sign off for another year. First up, here's Dan Imhoff's assessment of those four hours and 19 minutes of drama on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

“It’s been incredible work the last month. We were struggling a lot with the injury,” Alcaraz said on court after the final. “Coming back to Madrid, I didn’t feel well and then the next weeks with a lot of doubts coming here, not practising too many hours on the court.

“I’m really grateful to have the team that I have. I know that everyone in my team is giving their heart to make me improve as a player and as a person so I’m really grateful and I call you a team but it’s a family.”

"Congratulations on this immense victory," writes the former world No.1.

From one champion to another 🏆

Swedish great Bjorn Borg presents 2024 Roland-Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz with the Coupes des Mousquetaires...

19:37

WHAT IT MEANS

19:30

ALCARAZ IS THE CHAMPION 🏆

He’s done it! Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz wins his first Roland Garros title and the third Grand Slam trophy of his career with a marathon 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alexander Zverev. It’s taken four hours and 19 minutes and he collapses onto the Paris clay in celebration. WHAT AN EFFORT.

19:26

Alcaraz a game from victory

Alcaraz almost grabs a double break in the fifth game before Zverev gets back to his chair with the scores at 2-3. The Spaniard finds himself in trouble in the next game at 15-30 before producing some big tennis under pressure to hold for 4-2. This time the 21-year-old makes sure of a double break to go up 5-2 final set. One more service hold - he's on the brink of victory...

19:03

WHAT A GAME

What an incredible fourth game of the deciding set, a game that featured the point of the match so far with both players treated to a Chatrier standing ovation. Alcaraz digs deep to somehow recover from 0-40 – eventually saving four break points along the way - and we get the loudest, prolonged cheer of the day as he holds for 3-1 final set.

18:50

Alcaraz breaks for 2-1 fifth set

The trainer was back out for Alcaraz at the end of the fourth set while Zverev left the court for a quick bathroom break. It’s the Spaniard who strikes first to break for 2-1 after a couple of costly Zverev misses at the start of the third game. Alcaraz converts his second chance when Zverev pushes a backhand long and the third seed is in the driving seat now.

18:35

INTO A DECIDER 💥

Alcaraz breaks AGAIN for a 5-1 lead when Zverev dumps a forehand into the net and the Spaniard eventually holds in game seven to race through that fourth set 6-1. Neither player can seem to build a decent head of steam in this final so far. This is anyone’s now and perhaps it will boil down to which player can control their emotions better over the next nerve-jangling hour or so of tennis. Drama guaranteed…

18:20

Trainer for Alcaraz

The two men swap another couple of breaks to leave Zverev serving at 1-4 in the fourth set and the trainer comes out for Alcaraz at the change of ends. Seems to be working on the Spaniard’s left thigh or groin area during that three-minute break in play.

18:10

Alcaraz strikes back

About those twists and turns... Alcaraz brushes off the disappointment of losing that third set by racing into a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Can he make the most of his lead this time around and take this into a decider? The lion's share of this Chatrier crowd wouldn't mind seeing one...

17:55

Closing in...

17:53

Zverev wins third set 7-5

Ooof, that’s gotta hurt for Carlos. The Spaniard led 5-2 in that third set and was two points away from sealing it serving at 5-3 30-all only to lose five games in a row. It’s a massive set to win for Zverev who is now only a set away from a first Grand Slam title, up 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Feels like we might have a few more twists and turns yet, mind…

17:41

Zverev to serve at 6-5

Zverev does indeed hold to make it three games in a row to level at 5-5 before a surprisingly erratic game from Alcaraz on serve. Whether it’s nerves – or maybe fatigue – causing this dip Zverev gratefully accepts another break of serve on a plate. He’ll serve for the set at 6-5.

17:34

Zverev breaks back in the third

Just when it was looking like Alcaraz would serve out the third set Zverev strings together two decent points with the Spaniard serving at 5-3 30-all and a hammer of a backhand pass seals the break-back to haul the German to 4-5. Zverev needs to hold now to keep this third set alive.

17:20

Alcaraz leads 5-2 third set

Alcaraz makes his move in the sixth game of the set to break for 4-2. Zverev fluffs an attempted drop shot on the opening point of the game before back-to-back winners from the Spaniard earn him three break points at 0-40. The third seed steps in to crunch a backhand return and Zverev shanks his reply wide. It’s not the tidiest of games that follows from Alcaraz but he saves three break points en route to a much-needed hold to finally get to his chair with a three-game cushion.

17:08

A-Rod analysis

Alcaraz holds to make it five games on serve in the third set with the Spaniard ahead 3-2 at the sit-down. Here's former world No.1 Andy Roddick's take on the tactical battle unfolding. The American says Zverev has adjusted his forehand strike and trajectory as the match has developed.

16:50

One set all

Zverev holds to love to serve out the second set 6-2. That’s more like it from Zverev in terms of serve stats. He only missed four first serves the entire second set and only dropped four points behind his first delivery (16 of 20). He’s tidied up the baseline game too all of a sudden – just four unforced in set number two. It’s Alcaraz who’ll know he must play better to wrestle back the initiative as we head into the third…

16:44

Zverev leads 5-2, double break

That break of serve seems to have given Zverev a shot of confidence and a bit more freedom to start to express himself. He’s beginning to hit with a bit more venom from the back and it's Alcaraz who is starting to miss. The German holds for 4-2 and then nicks another break when Alcaraz double faults on break point - that should be enough for Zverev to level the match.

16:27

Zverev breaks

And from out of nowhere Zverev breaks in the fifth game to lead 3-2. It’s the Spaniard’s turn to throw in an edgy game on serve and the German makes his move when Alcaraz shanks a forehand on the second of two break points. Advantage Zverev in set number two…

16:18

Alcaraz leads 6-3, 2-1*

Zverev just cannot find anywhere near his best level of tennis and the frustration is beginning to show. The German’s desperate looks towards his team behind the baseline are becoming more frequent as the error count rises. He eventually holds but in truth it was another patchy game on serve from the world No.4. In contrast Alcaraz cruises through his to 15 to edge ahead 6-3, 2-1 on serve.

16:09

Alcaraz saves break points

This time it’s a tough game on serve for Alcaraz who’ll be delighted to get himself out of that sticky situation in the opening game of the second set. Three times he found himself break point down but produced a big first serve on each of those three points and he eventually holds for 1-0 second set.

15:56

First set Alcaraz 6-3

Carlos Alcaraz has the cushion of a one-set lead after he breaks again to wrap it up after 43 minutes. In truth, Zverev will be disappointed with his level during the opener when he hit just three winners against 10 unforced errors. The German has only won 48 percent of his first serve points, a number that’s normally way higher. All credit to the Spaniard though who has settled the quicker of the two and is dictating most of the baseline points.

15:45

Alcaraz leads *4-3

Alcaraz has chances to go up a double break but lets Zverev off the hook as he holds to get it back to 3-4 first set. The Spaniard had a short-ish forehand pass with Zverev down 15-40 in that seventh game that the third seed dumped in the net. Zverev escapes to hold after another shaky service game.

15:35

Alcaraz up a break 3-2

We’ve had three breaks in the first five games. First Zverev hits back immediately to level for 1-1 but there’s another break around the corner for Alcaraz who takes the German’s serve to love for a 3-2 lead. A couple of missed backhands from Zverev left him in a hole and Alcaraz was happy to accept the opportunity.

15:18

Alcaraz breaks first game

A nervy start from the German who opens up with back-to-back double faults, then immediately changes his racquet at 0-30 before the third point of the match. Later in the game Alcaraz produces a beauty of an angled drop volley to bring up his first break point and the Spaniard smokes a forehand up the line to break. Big start from Carlitos...

Coming up: Alcaraz vs Zverev

Here we go then, after 15 days of main draw tennis it’s the last match of Roland-Garros 2024 - the men’s final between third seed Carlos Alcaraz and fourth seed Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz is aiming for his third major title (2022 US Open and 2023 Wimbledon) and his first here in Paris. Zverev is playing his second Grand Slam final having finished runner-up in New York in 2020 to Dominic Thiem.

It’s a 10th meeting with Zverev up 5-4 in their head-to-head. They’ve played twice this year with the German winning their Australian Open match in four sets. Alcaraz got his revenge on the Indian Wells hard courts in California where he dropped just four games during a straight-sets victory.

After four breaks of serve during the opening 12 games, the women's doubles final goes into a first set tiebreak and it's Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova who win the tiebreak 7-5 after 58 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Siniakova, who's won this title twice before in 2018 and 2021, pounces to intercept to take her team to 6-5 in the shootout and they convert their first set point when a lob volley from the Italians drops long.
