See you Thursday

That wraps up another memorable day of tennis in Paris. Despite the rain we were treated to one of the best matches of the year when Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka met on Chatrier in the late afternoon.

Fingers crossed for better weather on Day 5 because we're playing catch-up on the order of play and have 55 singles matches scheduled as well as a few doubles too.

We'll be back at 11am for the first ball of the day.

Bye for now.

Kotov scraps past Stan

World No.56 Pavel Kotov is the last winner of the day in Paris as he fights past Stan Wawrinka at 00:31 on Thursday morning.

It's the first time Kotov will appear in the third round of a major and he's done it 7-6(5), 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5) after 3 hours and 40 minutes on a damp, heavy court.

His reward for his late show on Court Suzanne-Lenglen is a Friday appointment with No.2 seed Jannik Sinner.

Iga talks to the press

Defending champion Iga Swiatek reacts to her incredible escape act en route to narrowly beating Naomi Osaka in the second round on Wednesday. Hear what she had to say below.

Sinner the late-night winner

Men’s second seed Jannik Sinner negotiates a tricky night session against French fave Richard Gasquet in front of a partisan crowd to progress to the third round 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

After his recent hip problem, the Italian makes it six sets out of six to set up a meeting with either Pavel Kotov or Stan Wawrinka in the round of 32 on Friday.

Those two are the last players on court over on Lenglen where Kotov is up two sets to one on the Swiss former champion.

Wawrinka took the third set 6-1 to keep his chances of a late-night victory alive. The three-time major winner is now up a break in the fourth.

What a day

We've had a lot of excitement today at Roland-Garros and it's only Day 4.

Here are just some of the best moments.

Enjoy!

22:58

Sinner hunting R3 spot

Jannik Sinner's quality is starting to show on Court Philippe-Chatrier where the Italian has now opened up a two-set lead.

The No.2 seed enjoyed a more comfortable second set against French veteran Richard Gasquet and now leads 6-4, 6-2, 2-0...

Swiatek-Osaka highlights

If you missed this one earlier today, we HIGHLY recommend fully focusing on the best bits from their INCREDIBLE second round contest under the Chatrier roof. Enjoy...

22:25

Shot of the Day

Who else could it be other than Naomi Osaka after a swashbuckling performance against defending champ Iga Swiatek that took her to within a point of victory. This is the sort of tennis she was treating us to this afternoon...

22:18

Sinner on top, Stan down a set

The party atmosphere is continuing on Chatrier but some big French support hasn't been enough to help Richard Gasquet come through the first set against Jannik Sinner.

The Italian No.2 seed edges that opener 6-4 and over on Lenglen Pavel Kotov is up 7-6(3), 3-3 on former champ Stan Wawrinka.

Read all about it

If you've caught your breath after that incredible comeback from Iga on Chatrier, take a moment to read Chris Oddo's analysis of the match and what it might mean for both players.

And you may have been so absorbed in the Osaka-Swiatek showdown that you missed Coco Gauff's win on Suzanne-Lenglen, where she booked her place in the third round with victory over Tamara Zidansek. Dan Imhoff was watching that one and gives us his thoughts.

Coming up: Gasquet vs Sinner

We're all still recovering from the Swiatek-Osaka show, but at 21:10 local the night session begins. And Richard Gasquet and Jannik Sinner are ready to keep the entertainment coming...

20:39

High praise from Davenport

On the Tennis Channel Roland-Garros 2024 coverage, former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport sums up the level of that contest perfectly.

“The highest quality second round match at a major I’ve ever seen,” says the three-time Grand Slam winner.

20:36

Swiatek SURVIVES

What have we just witnessed under the Chatrier roof?

We’ve all just seen defending champion Iga Swiatek produce a quite incredible comeback to beat a brilliant Naomi Osaka, but many still won’t believe their eyes after what just unfolded over the last three hours.

The top seed, world No.1 and three-time champion saved a match point and recovered from 5-2 down in the final set to somehow win 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5 after 2 hours and 57 minutes of gripping, thrilling, high quality tennis.

It seemed it was all over as Osaka thumped her way into a commanding final set lead and a match point when she served for victory at 5-3.

But Swiatek dug in, kept believing and scrapped her way to an unlikely victory to make it 27 wins in her last 28 matches at Roland-Garros.

Even Swiatek will probably be wondering how she withstood Osaka’s barrage of winners that totalled 54 when the two shook hands.

A memorable match and, even despite the defeat, one that demonstrates Osaka is back in the bigtime.

And here's Carlos

Watch the highlights as No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the third round with a four-set win over the tricky Jesper de Jong.

Alcaraz now faces either Sebastian Korda or Soonwoo Kwon.

Rublev recap

Here are the highlights of No.6 seed Andrey Rublev's 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Spain's Pedro Martinez.

19:48

Night session: Not long now

Richard Gasquet and Jannik Sinner have met each other on two previous occasions. Both were last year and both were won by the Italian.

But they have never met on clay and Gasquet will no doubt have more than a few supporters in the house.

Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect.

19:40

Hear from Ons

Earlier today, No.8 seed Ons Jabeur booked her place in the second round with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, victory over Camila Osorio.
Hear what she had to day about it.

And Dan Imhoff gives us his thoughts about what we learned from Jabeur's performance today.

19:30

Tomorrow's order of play has dropped

After a rain-disrupted day today, here’s hoping for more action around the courts tomorrow.

Play starts at 11:00 on Suzanne-Lenglen with Daniil Medvedev facing off against Miomir Kecmanovic for their second round clash.

Also at 11:00, Hubert Hurkacz and Brandon Nakashima take up where they left off – that’s at 6-5 to Nakashima in the first set – on Court Simonne-Mathieu.

Over on Chatrier, play starts at midday when Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima will attempt to get past No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, then Elina Svitolina faces Diane Parry, Novak Djokovic’s quest for 25 Grand Slam titles continues as he meets Roberto Carballes Baena and Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti headline the night session.

>> FULL ORDER OF PLAY

19:25

All business from Carlos

Earlier on Chatrier, Carlos Alcaraz needed four sets to get past Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong and afterwards Alex Sharp assessed the Spaniard's performance en route to round three.

Iga-Naomi going the distance

Rather than letting the disappointment of losing the opening tiebreak take over, Naomi Osaka came out SWINGING in the second and played herself back into the match by taking a one-sided 6-1 set.

Osaka thumped an inside-out forehand return winner to convert a break point for a 3-0 lead and when she held for 4-0 Swiatek had won only four points in the opening four games.

By the end of the set Osaka had struck 10 winners against only two unforced errors. Game on.

18:45

Swiatek edges 67-min first set

Top seed Iga Swiatek saves a set point before racing through the tiebreak 7-1 against Naomi Osaka to take control on Chatrier. The Polish defending champion initially went up an early break only for Osaka to hit back in the eighth game to level at 4-4.

Osaka missed a backhand just long when she held set point on Swiatek’s serve at 4-5 and, after the world No.1 held, eventually they needed a shootout to settle it.

Swiatek clocked a big backhand return on the opening point to give her an immediate mini break and she quickly built on that to go up 3-0. More solid tennis earned her the set after 67 minutes of fascinating exchanges.

18:32

Rublev into R3

We have a result over on Lenglen where No.6 seed Andrey Rublev earns a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Spain's Pedro Martinez. It'll be Alexandre Muller or Matteo Arnaldi up next for the recent Madrid Masters champion.

Next on that court Coco Gauff will take on qualifier and former semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek.

17:55

Every cloud…

There may be no more play on the outside courts today but there’s plenty more happening on the two covered show courts.

Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka have just got started on Chatrier, and they will be followed by French fan favourite Richard Gasquet and No.2 seed Jannik Sinner for the night session.

Over on Lenglen, sixth seed Andrey Rublev is currently two sets up against Spaniard Pedro Martinez and when that match is finished, No.3 seed and 2022 finalist Coco Gauff will face Slovenian Tamara Zidansek, who made the semi-finals here in 2021.

And there’s a bonus: Pavel Kotov, in his second Roland-Garros appearance, has been added to the Lenglen programme for his match-up against RG2015 champion Stan Wawrinka, who is contesting his 19th tournament here in Paris.

17:35

Alcaraz moves on

A huge roar goes up inside Chatrier as Carlos Alcaraz completes a four-set win over impressive qualifier Jesper De Jong. He’ll be happy to finish so strongly after letting slip the third set, eventually wrapping it up 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

There’s a huge reception for the world No.176 from the Netherlands as he waves goodbye to the crowd. Alcaraz will be back on Friday to play Seb Korda or Soonwoo Kwon in the third round.

"Every player can give you trouble," said Alcaraz afterwards, referring to the Dutchman's ranking. "You have to be focused in every match and every round.

"I was in trouble a little bit and I was happy to do it at the end."

Alcaraz breaks in the fourth

It's been far from easy in the fourth set for Carlos Alcaraz, but he breaks Jesper De Jong in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead and he's not far from finishing this now. The Spaniard leads 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 4-2. Two more holds...

16:40

Rublev and Martinez on Lenglen

The third match of the day on Lenglen sees No.6 seed Andrey Rublev take on world No.48 Pedro Martinez from Spain. Judging by the photo of them in the tunnel before they walked, Rublev is itching to get to work... He's up 2-1 on serve in the first set.

All eyes on Chatrier

We’re not quite on ‘upset alert’ just yet on Chatrier but things are getting very interesting over there as Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong (pictured) smokes his way through the third set 6-2 in 35 minutes against Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spanish third seed, who leaked 15 unforced errors in that set, needs a big response at the start of the fourth to avoid a dogfight on the main show court here in Paris. Alcaraz is up two sets to one... 👀

Jabeur survives in three

Ons Jabeur lets out a big roar after finishing off a topsy-turvy 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over world No.77 Camila Osorio from Colombia on a heavy Court Suzanne-Lenglen. She needed to improve things after a poor second set and Jabeur the eighth seed did just that to set up a meeting with either Canada's Leylah Fernandez or China's Xiyu Wang. Theirs is one of the matches currently unable to be completed because of rain.

15:47

Alcaraz a set from victory

Third seed and former semi-finalist Carlos Alcaraz will be relieved to move into a two-set lead against Dutch qualifier Jesper De Jong on Chatrier. The Spaniard had to save a break point at 4-4 in the second, but eventually held and then broke for a 6-3, 6-4 lead over the world No.176. De Jong beat Britain's Jack Draper in five sets in the first round.

Tough test for Jabeur

Eighth seed Ons Jabeur needs to respond quickly on Court Suzanne-Lenglen where she's just been taken to a deciding set by Colombia's Camila Osorio. The Tunisian star took the first 6-3, but has badly lost her way since.

World No.77 Osorio completely dominated the second to take it 6-1 and will now feel very good about her chances of a top 10 win.

Carlos on court

No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and Jesper de Jong are under way on Chatrier.

It's world No.176 De Jong's first Roland-Garros campaign and although it's early doors he's keeping up with the Spaniard, ranked 173 places above him.

It's currently 3-3 in the first set.

14:00

Stef through to round of 32

Stefanos Tsitsipas comes from a break down in the fourth set to get past dangerous German Daniel Altmaier in four sets on Lenglen.

13:47

Dogged determination

Last year's quarter-finalist Tomas Martin Etcheverry may be playing in only his third Roland-Garros, but he's had his sights set on competing in Paris for quite some time 🐶

13:36

Kenin into Round 3

Roland-Garros 2020 runner-up Sofia Kenin reminds everyone why she can be a threat on this surface by cruising past French No.1 Caroline Garcia on Chatrier 6-3, 6-3. The American world No.56 is the first player into the third round in either draw and will play either 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko or Denmark’s Clara Tauson on Friday.

"I absolutely love this court and I feel like I have a connection with it," Kenin told the crowd afterwards.

Gasquet headlines night session

French wildcard Richard Gasquet, competing in his 21st Roland-Garros campaign, takes to Chatrier for the night session tonight.

The 2016 quarter-finalist came through the first round with a rollercoaster 7-6(5), 7-6(2), 6-4 encounter with Borna Coric.

He faces 2020 quarter-finalist and No.2 seed Jannik Sinner for a place in the second round and a meeting with either Stan Wawrinka or Pavel Kotov.

12:50

Tsitsipas in a battle

Daniel Altmaier is back in this contest with Stefanos Tsitsipas after playing a solid third set tiebreak, racing away with it 7-2. The Greek ninth seed is now up two sets to one.

The German produced a beauty of a backhand drop volley to go up 3-1 and never looked back.

Altmaier has wins over Matteo Berrettini in 2020 and last year Jannik Sinner in previous Roland-Garros editions.

12:41

That's dedication

There's fandom and then there's fandom.

French ceramic artist and tennis fan Jacques Monneraud spent 400 hours recreating the Coupe des Mousquetaires.

It's quite the work of art.

12:15

Hola Carlos!

No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz has arrived and is second up on Chatrier for his second round match against RG debutant Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands.

The winner will play either Sebastian Korda or Soonwoo Kwon - they've just got under way on Court 13 where Korda is serving for the first set.

12:05

Umbrella time

The covers are on on the outside courts. Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on what's happening ☔

But there's plenty to watch as play goes on under the roof of Court Suzanne-Lenglen, where Tsitsipas is currently a set and 5-1 up against Altmaier.

And over on Chatrier, Caroline Garcia and Sofia Kenin are just warming up ahead of their second round match.

11:58

Overheard at Roland-Garros

“I can’t wait to see that guy Ben Shelton. He’s the one with the fastest serve, he hits it like 150 sometimes, it’s crazy!”

Love it.

Ben Shelton and his crazy serve are currently 5-5 in the first set against Kei Nishikori on Court 7.

11:32

Naomi's arrived

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka takes on world No.1 and defending champion (and also four-time major winner) Iga Swiatek in the last match of the day session today on Chatrier.

The winner will take their place in the third round to face either Croatian Lucky Loser Jana Fett or Czech Marie Bouzkouva. They are currently 2-2 in the first set on Court 9.

11:15

Doubling up

Men’s and women’s doubles get started today with both the men's and the women's No.1 seeds in action.

There’s an all-Argentine vs all-French clash second up on Court 2 as Tomas Martin Etcheverry, fresh from yesterday’s singles victory over Arthur Cazaux pairs up with compatriot Francisco Cerundolo to take on Arthur Fils and Luca van Assche

If you missed yesterday’s farewell to Alize Cornet on Philippe Chatrier following her loss in singles to Qinwen Zheng, you’ve got another chance to see her today.

Cornet, who has appeared in a record 69 consecutive Grand Slams (yes, you read that right) is pairing up with Fiona Ferro in the women’s doubles and they face Anna Blinkova and Arantxa Rus later this afternoon.

>> MEN’S AND WOMEN’S DOUBLES DRAWS

11:00

Bonjour!

Welcome to Day 4 of Roland-Garros 2024.

It’s looking pretty overcast at the moment, but the rain is holding off for now so we’re looking forward to a great day of tennis.

Round 2 of the men’s and women’s singles starts today, with No.9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniel Altmaier getting things under way on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, while over on Court Simonne-Matthieu big-serving Pole Hubert Hurkacz and the USA’s Brandon Nakashima are first up.

At midday, home favourite Caroline Garcia will take to Court Philippe-Chatrier to face 2020 Roland-Garros finalist Sofia Kenin.

Another French favourite, Richard Gasquet, who is playing in his 21st Roland-Garros, headlines the night match and takes on No.2 seed Jannik Sinner

Here’s the Order of Play for Day 4, and here are all the draws.
