R3 on Friday...

What an extraordinary day in Paris. On Thursday morning there were 55 singles matches to complete and despite more rain today all 55 of those were finished to get both singles draws back on track.

On Friday (Day 6 of main draw action) there are eight third round matches in the top half of the women’s draw and eight R3 contests in the bottom half of the men’s draw.

That means the likes of Iga Swiatek, third seed Coco Gauff, fifth seed Marketa Vondrousova and No.8 seed Ons Jabeur are all on the schedule.

Men’s seeds Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hubert Hurkacz are lined up to entertain too. Alcaraz faces Sebi Korda in Friday’s night session on Chatrier.

There are also a ton of doubles matches to be played - including Andy Murray on the doubles court alongside Dan Evans late on Friday - and we’ll be back at 10am with lots more coverage.

Thanks for joining us.

Andreeva back in round three

Mirra Andreeva holds her nerve to come through a tight three-setter against No.19 seed Victoria Azarenka as the Roland-Garros clock strikes 1am on Friday morning.

The 17-year-old was a break up three times in the final set before eventually shaking off the former world No.1 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 on Court 12.

She plays American Peyton Stearns in the round of 32.

00:32

Azarenka-Andreeva late shift

There's just one last singles on court now - a second round match between former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka and the 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who reached the third round in Paris 12 months ago.

There's still a decent crowd around Court 12 as these two enter a third hour. It's 3-3 in the deciding set.

Rune to face Kovalik

Slovakian Josef Kovalik has come through a thriller on Court 9 to despatch 18th seed Karen Khachanov.

At two sets down it was not looking good for the 31-year-old, but Kovalik battled back to post a 4-6, 4-6,  6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory and secure a place in the third round – the first time he has made it this far at Roland-Garros.

The world No.145 now faces Holger Rune on Saturday, the Dane coming through his own five-set thriller with a daring escape from Flavio Cobolli on Court 14 in front of vocal crowds.

Best moments

There have been so many best moments of Day 5... and a selection of them have been squeezed into 60 seconds.

23:15

A quick recap

Watch the highlights of world No.125 Olga Danilovic and her upset of No.11 seed Danielle Collins. Danilovic is first up on Simonne-Mathieu tomorrow to face Croatian top-40 player Donna Vekic in the third round.

Here's also a reminder of Denis Shapovalov's victory over 25th seed Frances Tiafoe over on Court 11 earlier today. The Canadian will face big-serving Pole Hubert Hurkacz third up on Court Simonne-Mathieu tomorrow.

23:03

Rune SURVIVES

What a match the Court 14 crowd have been treated to over the last four hours as 13th seed Holger Rune denies young Italian Flavio Cobolli at the death 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, 7-6(7).

Rune will be back on Saturday to play Karen Khachanov or Jozef Kovalik who are into their own deciding set over on Court 9.

Ruud pushed to five

Over on Lenglen, seventh seed Casper Ruud is into a fifth set with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after the Spaniard took the fourth set 6-4.

Davidovich Fokina is looking to repeat his Roland-Garros win over the Norwegian when he edged their third round meeting here in 2021 7-5 in the decider.

22:45

Musetti over La Monf

Italian Lorenzo Musetti produced an efficient performance to beat French veteran Gael Monfils in the Chatrier night session. His 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 victory sets him up with a corker of a third round contest against defending champion and world No.1 Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

In 2021, Musetti led Djokovic by two sets to love here in Paris only for the Serb to come back to get through in five sets as the youngster tired.

A Djokovic fest

Novak Djokovic’s quest for a fourth Roland-Garros title and 25th Grand Slam trophy overall continued on Thursday with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

Rune-Cobolli thriller unfolding

Court 14 is arguably the place to be right now. It's rocking out there as Italian Flavio Cobolli attempts to pull an upset against 13th seed Holger Rune. Cobolli snatched the fourth set 6-3 to take it into a decider and they're locked at 4-4 in the fifth under the lights. That's one of THIRTEEN courts in action at 10.30pm...

Thursday night under the lights

It’s going to be a blockbuster evening in Paris as we still have 15 courts with live matches at just gone 9.30pm.

It’s a good time to take you through some of the more significant scores as Casper Ruud has just gone two sets to one ahead against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Lorenzo Musetti has bagged the opener 7-5 against Gael Monfils in the night match on Chatrier.

A massive crowd on Simonne-Mathieu has watched French fave Corentin Moutet move into round three by beating Alexander Shevchenko in four sets, while Holger Rune looks like he's closing in on a four-set win over Flavio Cobolli on Court 14.

Peyton Stearns and Daria Kasatkina are in the early stages on Court 2, while Qinwen Zheng and Tamara Korpatsch are under way on Court 8.

Over on Court 12 27th seed Linda Noskova trails Irina-Camelia Begu by a set.

Ruud ahead, Ostapenko out

We've been treated to a great set of tennis between Casper Ruud and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Lenglen and it's Ruud who nicks the first set breaker 7-5 after 61 minutes.

In the women's draw we've lost 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko who was on the wrong end of a tight three-setter with Denmark's Clara Tauson on Court 13.

Night and Day at Roland-Garros

Time to head over to the RG studios where host Gigi Salmon takes us through the results of the day and previews Thursday's night session when Gael Monfils will face Lorenzo Musetti.

Danilovic shocks Collins

One of the more notable results in the women's draw today saw Serb world No.125 Olga Danilovic (pictured below) fight back to beat No.11 seed Danielle Collins, one of the form players on tour over recent months. Qualifier Danilovic made it five wins on the bounce in Paris by fighting back from a set and 5-3 down to win 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 to book a meeting with Donna Vekic.

Elsewhere in the women's draw there have been wins for Madison Keys, Elise Mertens, Elisabetta Cocchiaretto and Leylah Fernandez.

Men to go through in the last hour or so include Denis Shapovalov over Frances Tiafoe, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Tallon Griekspoor and Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs who is into the third round at a major for the first time after his success over Germany's Max Marterer.

Ruud-Davidovich Fokina moved to Lenglen

There's a court change for Casper Ruud's second round meeting with Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who will start on Court Suzanne-Lenglen not before 7pm local.

No.368 for Novak

Novak Djokovic took his Grand Slam match win tally to 368 - one short of Roger Federer - by seeing off Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.

The win takes the Serb one major match win clear of Serena Williams who notched 367 during her career.

The top seed will be back on Saturday for a third round match against either Gael Monfils or Lorenzo Musetti who will feature in Thursday's Chatrier night session at 20:15. Let's get you in the mood for that... 🔥

17:55

Scores update

The weather is looking more settled here now so we’re hopeful of a good chunk of tennis on the outside courts where there are some great battles developing with big, noisy crowds surrounding every single court.

Danielle Collins served for victory at 7-6(3), 5-4 against Olga Danilovic on Court 10 only for the Serb to win four successive games from 3-5 to steal the second set 7-5 to force a decider. Thanasi Kokkinakis and Flavio Cobolli were hanging courtside watching the end of that set.

Next door, Denis Shapovalov is up two sets to one on Frances Tiafoe at 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 3-3 with the winner to face Hubert Hurkacz, who finished off his R2 match against Brandon Nakashima in four sets.

Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet was getting some of the loudest support of anyone and it helped her to a 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6) win over 32nd seed Katerina Siniakova on Court 7.

On Court 14 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova completed a comeback win over American Katie Volynets 0-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Medvedev growing in confidence

Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev didn't get much of a workout earlier on Thursday when his second round opponent, Miomir Kecmanovic, retired after a set and a half. Back into the third round, the world No.5 is starting to feel good on the Paris clay, reports Alex Sharp.

Fourth seed in good form

Alexander Zverev completes his second straight-sets win of the tournament with a 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2 victory over David Goffin three days after beating Rafael Nadal in the first round.

The result extends the German’s win streak to eight matches after he claimed the ATP Rome Masters title prior to Paris.

“I felt the ball well today,” Zverev said, who admitted the damp, heavy conditions aren’t his favourite to play in. “Maybe a few mistakes here and there, but still… happy with the level of tennis.”

Novak chasing Roger's record

As Novak Djokovic steps onto Court Philippe-Chatrier for his second round match against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena, the world No.1 knows another win at this level will take him to within one victory of equalling Roger Federer's all-time Grand Slam match win tally.

Currently Federer is at the top of that leaderboard with 369 wins at the four majors, with both Djokovic and Serena Williams tied in second place with 367.

Busy Badosa

Paula Badosa is into the third round of the women's singles with victory earlier today over Yulia Putintseva; she now faces No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.

But singles isn't her only ambition here at Roland-Garros 2024 – she and boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas (who is also contesting the men's singles and men's doubles) have their sights set on the mixed doubles crown. They will open their campaign against Japan's Ana Shibahara and Nathaniel Lammons of the USA.

15:35

Svitolina through

Elina Svitolina booked her place in the third round with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over French 21-year-old Diane Parry. She'll now meet either Ana Bogdan or No.20 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Svitolina will be returning to Chatrier for the night session tonight where her husband Gael Monfils takes on No.30 seed Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

Zverev grabs tiebreak set

Alexander Zverev and David Goffin have been playing out an interesting first set and it's the German fourth seed who finishes it 7-4 in the tiebreak on Lenglen. Over on Chatrier, Elina Svitolina isn't too far from a spot in round three as she leads Diane Parry 6-4, 5-6.

The break in play continues because of wet weather across the rest of Roland-Garros and there'll be no tennis on those other courts before 15:45 local time.

Good vibes from Osaka

Yesterday on Chatrier, former world No.1 and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka lost out in a tight contest to defending champion Iga Swiatek.

But that loss brought many positives for the 26-year-old who is on the comeback trail following maternity leave.

A flurry of match points from around the grounds see Elena Rybakina, Grigor Dimitrov, Sebi Korda and Matteo Arnaldi all finish off second round matches.

Korda's four-set win over Soonwoo Kwon means he plays Carlos Alcaraz on Friday, while Arnaldi gets a shot at Andrey Rublev after the Italian beat Alexandre Muller in straights.

Sabalenka was pleased with her level and is already planning her evening. “I’m super happy with the performance today,” she said. “I feel like going for a good steak.”

No.4 seed Elena Rybakina continues her campaign on Court Suzanne-Lenglen now in the second match of the day over there. She's up against Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus under the new roof for a third round spot.

12:24

Sabalenka a break up

This was the walk second seed Aryna Sabalenka made on her way to Court Philippe-Chatrier a little while ago. She's made a good start against Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima, ahead 5-2 first set.

Elsewhere there's been a bit of rain over RG so matches on the outside courts are currently paused.

12:09

Kecmanovic retires, Medvedev through

Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic pulls the plug towards the end of the second set with a physical issue so Daniil Medvedev is one of the first winners of the day. He goes through 6-1, 5-0 retired, and will play Argentine 31st seed Mariano Navone or Czech Tomas Machac in round three.

Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska is another early winner, easing past Yafan Wang 6-2, 6-0 on Court 10. She plays third seed Coco Gauff in the third round.

Wednesday’s night session finished with victory for No.2 seed Jannik Sinner in his second round clash against home favourite Richard Gasquet.

Watch the match highlights and hear what Sinner had to say afterwards.

11:35

Breaking down the schedule

Quick analysis of those 55 second round singles on the order of play today. There are still 23 matches to get through that should have been played yesterday – 11 in the bottom half of the men’s draw and 12 in the top half of the women’s.

Add those to the 16 women’s bottom half matches and the 16 top half men’s matches originally scheduled today and, even by my very basic maths skills, that makes 55.

There are nine players into the third round from yesterday’s matches completed under shelter. Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz, Pavel Kotov and Jannik Sinner in the men’s draw. And Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin and Ons Jabeur in the women’s.

Over on Simonne-Mathieu, big serving Hubert Hurkacz and Brandon Nakashima will pick up where they left off yesterday – that’s with Nakashima 6-5 up in the first set.

No.2 seed and winner of the Australian Open Aryna Sabalenka starts at 12:00 on Philippe-Chatrier. She faces Moyuka Uchijima, who may be making her Roland-Garros debut but she’s come through qualifying and the first round without dropping a set.
