In just his fourth Grand Slam and on his Roland-Garros debut, it was the 24th-seeded Canadian who appeared testier at the trying weather conditions in the opening set. But playing with the fearlessness of youth, he was taking a bigger cut at the ball, finding the lines and finishing anything short at net, even with his back to the wall.
