Federer ended a run of three consecutive final losses on the clay of Paris and won Roland-Garros, the one Grand Slam still missing from his career CV. In the process he equalled Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam wins before moving past him with a sixth title at Wimbledon later that year.
