Rafael Nadal through the lens of Roland-Garros photographers
Jean-Charles Caslot : "Monday, 27 May 2024, 18:36: Rafa bids farewell in a stadium that’s been holding its breath since the draw was made! At the start of the tournament, our group of photographers are spread out across all the courts, but obviously many of us want to witness (or not!) this moment. Behind the scenes, there’s talk of a possible tribute ceremony, with it being his final match. Though that’s commonplace, Rafa doesn't want it – it's not yet time.
I'm certainly not the best placed in the Presidential box because of the early shadow, but I shoot anyway, telling myself I’ll certainly never see him again at this tournament… with a racket in his hand. We’re all sad. The stadium gives him a standing ovation, even though it could never sufficiently thank him for having left such an indelible mark on us and this sport. For me, this photo is above all the turning of a page, or a biblical denouement from thesporting gods!"
