A type 1 diabetic, Alexander Zverev regularly checks his blood sugar levels. On court, it's on the bench during the changeover; in real life, it's a routine that punctuates every day. His physical performance is simply exceptional given the constraints imposed by the disease.
Little is known about type 1 diabetes, yet it feels essential to shed light on this invisible, silent, insidious disease, which has long remained in the shadow of its type 2 counterpart, which is much more widespread and familiar to the public.
Zverev is a formidable ambassador. His success in top-level sport is exemplary and a beacon of hope for the thousands of children and young adults affected by this disease. Let's change the way we look at diabetes!
