The most astonishing exploit of the fortnight in London was courtesy of 34-year-old Tatjana Maria, No.103 in the WTA rankings and mother of two daughters born in 2013 and 2021. It was a first for the German player, who had never gone past the third round in a Grand Slam in 45 attempts (including the qualifying rounds). Her victories over seeded players Sorana Cirstea (No.26), Maria Sakkari (No.5) and Jelena Ostapenko (No.12) and against Jule Niemeier led her to the semi-finals, where she played her friend Ons Jabeur.
